Do you want or need to improve your posture? |

Yes? Then Pilates
is for you. Whether you are pregnant, recently had a baby,
a complete exercise novice, an elite athlete or your carrying
an injury, Pilates can benefit you.
Pilates is method of strengthening and lengthening the
body from top to toe. Posture and breathing is extremely
important and is considered at all times during Pilates.
However the focus initially is on the centre of the body
known as the core. You will learn how to activate your
pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscle (Transversus.Abdominus)
which stabilises your pelvis and protects your lower back.
You will alos learn how activate the muscles than stabalise
the shoulder joint. Engaging these muscles before and
during each exercise in Pilates will increase inner strength
and stability and this will be beneficial to you after
the class as well as during it. The idea of Pilates is
that you will become proportionally strong on the inside
and the outside, so that muscle function is restored,
balanced, and enhanced.
Pilates is a series of small precise and controlled movements
engaging the right muscles in the right order. This is
what makes Pilates so functional. As you progress is Pilates
you will quickly learn how to activate the internal and
external obliques and your rectus abdominus, which with
the transverse abdominus, make up the abdominal musculature.
These muscles will be working during every Pilates Class,
which is how you will get your slimmer stomach, strengthern
your back, gain a better posture, strengthen your pelvic
floor and get back your pre-pregnancy figure.
Pilates has a repetoire of different excercises with many
varying levels. Within every exercise, different options
will allow individuals to progess at their own ability.
The emphasis in Pilates is to challenge yourself, without
compromising correct form. Therefore progression through
the different levels of Pilates is down to the individual.
Introductory Level
Duration – usually 6 weeks
Cost – usually around £48 for 6 weeks
It is advised that anyone interested in Pilates, from
what ever exercise background starts at this level. This
will ensure the fundamental principles are understood
and you lay the foundations .
Beginners Level
Duration – usually 6 weeks
Cost – usually around £48 for 6 weeks
This level is a natural flow carrying on from the introductory
level course. You will learn new exercises that will put
your fundamental principles to the test!
Intermediate Level
Duration – usually 6 weeks
Cost – usually around £48 for 6 weeks
The pace of the class will start to increase. You will
be shown and given different more advanced options to
allow you to progress further with Pilates. This level
is not for everyone as you will now understand. Some people
should chose to stay at the introductory or beginners
level. This is what Pilates is about. Understanding your
body and recognising what is best for YOU Pilates works
best in when taught in smaller groups (or one on one).
A good Pilates teacher will fully interact throughout
the class to ensure participants are performing the exercises
properly. The teacher should provide different options
if a certain exercise is not suitable for you; for example,
pregnancy, injuries, general discomfort and so on.
If your budget allows, Pilates is also very effective
on a one to one basis either in your home or a healthy
living centre, particularly if you are carrying an injury
or have any other health concerns. Benefits
of Pilates during and after pregnancy
Pilates is fantastic during and after pregnancy and carries
numerous benefits. The very muscles you strengthen in
Pilates will help you to deliver your baby. It will also
help you strengthen your pelvic floor muscle which often
becomes weak and can lead to inconstinence following child
birth. Pregnancy is known to cause lower back pain as
posture changes with the weight of your baby. Pilates
exercises will help to alleviate lower back pain and maintain
your psotuere. Pilates alos facilitates relaxation and
many women have found it helps them to sleep well. Pilates
also allows people to get in otuch with, and understand
their bodies. Finally, pilates should help you return
to your pre-natal figure, get you out of the house and
help you regain your body confidence.
