Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a system of health care which originates in China and has been practiced for around 5000 years. Acupuncture is one of the main branches of Chinese Medicine. Chinese cosmology views the person as a
dynamic system of energy connected to and influenced by his/her environment. Energy (qi) is described as an elaborate network of channels (meridians) flowing throughout the entire body. Various energetic points, each with differing qualities are situated along these channels.

Through the insertion of fine needles at these points, Acupuncture influences the energy of the body. As energy is directed back into a harmonious state, the person simultaneously feels more balanced. Via this holistic approach Acupuncture can help maintain a state of health and relieve many conditions of dis-ease.

What can Acupuncture treat

Originally in China Acupuncture was used as a preventative medicine; to
help a person stay in balance and stop disease from arising. Many people
still use Acupuncture in this preventative manner. For example they may come at the change of the seasons, when they are experiencing a difficult period in their life, when low in energy, or simply feeling "not quite right".

In Chinese Medicine disease is viewed as the body's energy being out of
balance. As Acupuncture adjusts the energy it is able to treat a wide
variety of so called disease states. These include: breathing difficulties,
circulatory disorders, digestive disorders, emotional issues, gynaecological
disorders(PMT), joint problems/pain and urinary dysfunction

Many other conditions are alleviated successfully through Acupuncture
treatment.

What happens during a treatment?

The first treatment (about one and a half hours) is longer than subsequent
visits (about one hour) as a more detailed case history is appropriate
initially. Various questions are asked about past medical conditions,
current symptoms, diet, emotions and general lifestyle. Some areas of the
body are briefly observered such as face, tongue, hands feet and general
posture.

The pulse is taken at both wrists to feel the state of the various
energies of the body. Finally the person's birth and organ energies (Stems
and Branches philosophy)are taken into account. These can be helpful in
understanding inherent strenghs and weaknesses within the individual's
constitution.

Through the combined use of the above diagnostic tools the Acupuncturist
decides on a selection of Acupuncture points (usually three to five) and the
needles are inserted and left in for about twenty minutes.

All needles used are individually packed, sterile and disposable.

What reation might there be to Acupuncture?

People react to Acupuncture needles in a variety of ways; they may
describe "dull", "sharp" or "tingling" sensations. Following an Acupuncture
session the person usually feels relaxed and energised, or they may feel
more tired initially. Usually within a few days of the treatment some effect
is felt. Normally a course of treatment brings about gradual improvement of
the person's health. The number of treatments required depends on the
individual case.

Classical Five Element System of Acupuncture

Classical Five Element System of Acupuncture is a system of medicine that treats all the aspects of the human being, be it physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

This system has its roots in Ancient China where it was only available to the Emperors and their families. Handed down since Confucian times by word of mouthm this highly sought after care system treats the cause of disease and that is its main strength.

How does it work
The five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water together form the basic physiology of the human being. Disease occurs when one of these elements is out of balance over a long period of time. The Five Element system treats the causative factor which lies in one of the elements which impacts direcly on to the specific organ.

What happens when you go to see a Classical Element Acupurcturist

Initially a case history will be taken followed by a physical examination. This will help identify the cause and the first treatment is given. Allow 90 minutes for this initial visit. Fine disposable stainless steel needles are used and moxa which is a warming herb to heat the channels of energy. This gives a sense of well being.

What can this do for you
