What is McTimoney Chiropractic? |
| |
Across
the world there are many different chiropractic techniques
used. The McTimoney technique is just one method of
chiropractic used in the UK. It is a powerful non-invasive
form of body manipulation which aims not only to relieve
painful symptoms but also to treat dysfunction of the
spine and increase mobility of the whole body. During
a treatment, the whole body is evaluated rather than
focusing solely on a symptom or specific area.
The nervous system is responsible for all body functions.
The correct alignment of vertebrae in the spinal column
is vital to maintain nerve pathways. Misalignments (subluxations),
in the body can occur at any time. They may be related
to accidents, sporting activities, household tasks,
emotional and physical stress, even a bad mattress.
Some causes are so subtle that changes can occur without
the patient's knowledge as symptoms can take years to
arise.
When subluxations occur, a person can experience pain
- of any description, of any duration, anywhere down
the course of the nerve. This may lead to malfunction
in either the muscles or internal organs. For example,
tingling fingers can often be caused by subluxation
of the neck vertebrae. The McTimoney chiropractor will
examine the bones and joints of the body to check for
imbalance, however slight. Any problems found are corrected
with various adjustments which are effective and safe.
The bones are never forced into place, but by adjusting
with a rapid thrust and immediate release, the bone
'toggles' towards its correct position. By easing muscle
tension and using the natural elasticity of tendons
attached to the bone, the treatment is relatively gentle
and comfortable to receive. Anyone from babies to the
elderly can benefit.
If areas of the body are out of balance,
they can affect the whole; therefore the entire body
is assessed at each treatment. McTimoney chiropractic
aims to restore nerve function in order to promote natural
health. This involves re-educating the patient's muscles
and bones into a better alignment. It is also a preventive
therapy and can greatly improve overall health and well-being.
Regular check ups are recommended to ensure that the
body maintains a healthy balance. Special care after
falls etc. can prevent dis-ease from arising.
The aim is to release muscle spasm, restore the normal
range of movement of the affected joints and to alleviate
pain. The entire spine and other joints of the body
are examined and adjusted as necessary. Many people
find the treatment relaxing, due to the nature of the
adjustment and the holistic treatment although slight
discomfort maybe felt in the areas where inflammation
is apparent. The treatment is safe because the adjustment
works within the normal anatomic limits of the joint;
hence ligaments are not over stretched. |

How
can chiropractic treatment help me?
The goals of chiropractic care is to mobilize the joints
in the spine and extremities, restore normal range of
motion in the joints, reduce muscle spasm and pain and
stimulate the nervous system.
When the nervous system functions optimally, the body
is better able to fight off disease and maintain a state
of optimal health. Chiropractors today treat many thousands
of patients every week for a wide variety of ailments
affecting all parts of the body and the treatment can
be suitable for people of all ages and all walks of life,
including new born babies, the elderly, pregnant women
and sports enthusiasts. Common problems that can be helped
include: |
| |
- Low back pain/Sciatica
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Migraine and tension headaches
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Sporting injuries

A
1997 survey revealed that 89% of McTimoney chiropractic
patients were either 'extremely' or 'very satisfied' with
their treatment, and 85% reported that McTimoney chiropractic
had been 'very beneficial' in the treatment of their painful
condition. Sam Guillemard BSc (Hons)
