Bernadine Coady, of Cambridgeshire has had two operations
on her feet. In both cases, her surgeon cut through
skin and muscle, sawed through bones and stretched her
tendons – all without any anaesthetic. But she
felt NO PAIN AT ALL because she had learned how to use
hypnosis to totally control her consciousness of pain.
The mind is to the brain very much what programs are
to a computer hard-drive. And just like the proverbial
iceberg, the window on your screen is only a tiny fraction
of the whole works – and in many ways not the
most important part. Most of the really important workings
are hidden away at a deeper level. So if you get a glitch
in the program, while you may find a way to work around
the problem – your everyday operating systems
can’t actually fix the glitch.
These are metaphors I frequently use when trying to
help people to understand how the mind works, how Hypnotherapy
works – and why it can be so effective. And once
you reach those deeper levels, there are no known limits
to what you can achieve. It is a question of understanding
how our minds work: using a key, rather than breaking
the door down by brute force. For example, hundreds
of thousands of people are alive and well because they
were able to use the power of their mind (the Placebo
effect) to heal their body.
Most people come for Hypnotherapy because they want
some help with making some changes to their personality.
It might be to stop smoking or to lose weight –
changing their habits; or it might be to deal with some
fears or phobias, or panic attacks, or for better self-esteem;
or to get over some traumatic event.
People often find it hard to understand why they have
not been able to resolve their difficulty by sheer determination
and willpower. But unlike our conscious mind, our un-conscious
is on duty - whether its working properly or not - 24/7.
In a battle of conscious vs unconscious, the unconscious
will win 95% of the time.
And that is why hypnotic techniques - which are aimed
at the unconscious, and specifically formulated for
easy assimilation by our unconscious intelligence –
are so effective.
As one successfully ex-smoker said to me: “Its
like magic”.
