Why
Tai Chi?
People make wild claims about the health benefits of Tai
Chi and speak of magic powers learned by Shaolin monks
in ancient times. The truth is that the slow and meditative
movements we see and practise today were developed less
that 100 years ago (although the roots do go back several
centuries). Nevertheless Tai Chi is enjoyed by many people
all over the world as a gentle form of exercise that can
build up strength, and improve balance and co-ordination
(and in skilled hands is a very effective martial art).
It is ideal for people who, for whatever reason, are unable
to follow more vigorous activities, and for those that
can, it provides an interesting contrast to more aggressive
pursuits. It can also be very relaxing for people with
busy lifestyles. Yang Style Tai Chi
There are many different schools of Tai Chi including
Chen, Wu, Sun and the style Toshi teaches at Revitalise
is Yang. Tai Chi became a noted martial art through the
teachings of the founder of the Yang style, Yang Lu Chan,
and it was largely through the efforts of the first 3
generations of his family that Tai Chi has such a large
following in the world today. Yang style includes the
very popular "Beijing Short-form" (a form being
a sequence of Taichi movements), the 104 movement long-form
as well as sequences with swords and sticks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Tai Chi mean?
Tai Chi is a shortening of its full title Tai Chi Chuan
which means Supreme Ultimate Fist What
should I look for in a teacher? Try several classes
and find someone who you both get on with and is able
to explain things clearly and answer your questions.
Do I teach Chi Kung (Qi Gong)? Yes,
the first part of my classes are spent learning the 18
position Tai Chi/Chi Kung set which, whilst being valuable
in their own right, are a useful introduction to Tai Chi
movement.
What else will I learn in class? We begin by
learning the Beijing Short-form - a sequence of 24 Tai
Chi movements that takes about 4 minutes to perform.
How long will that take to learn?
With some practise at home, many students will be able
to get through the sequence unaided in 10 weeks (it then
takes a lifetime to master!).
Do you teach Tai Chi as a martial art? Tai Chi
is a martial art and whilst we do look at where the movements
come from, we don't practise fighting skills. Having said
this, more advanced students will learn "pushing
hands" and perhaps eventually the sword form.
Pushing Hands? Very simply, a gentle
competition with a partner to improve Tai Chi skills.
Where can I get more information? There are now
many books on Tai Chi and a wealth of material on the
Internet. |
