What
is it?
Firstly, it isn’t a therapy or treatment but rather
a practical self help technique to restore our natural
co-ordination and freedom in movement that we all possessed
as a child. It works by helping you to notice harmful
patterns of tension that may be the cause of stress and
pain. These patterns tend to be subconscious and build
up over a period of time so we are not aware they exist
until some physical problem such as a bad back or neck
leads to pain and discomfort. You learn to release this
tension and experience a new and more efficient way of
being.
It has now been proven that 24 lessons in the Alexander
Technique taught by registered teachers provide long-term
benefits for patients with chronic or recurrent low back
pain.
It is also known to have helped many people to
naturally overcome: |
| |
- muscle tension
- neck, shoulder and joint pain
- poor posture
- breathing and vocal problems
- anxiety and stress related conditions
- r.s.i (repetitive strain injury)

With helpful
explanations and gentle touch the teacher’s hands
guide you through everyday movements such as sitting,
standing, walking or bending, giving an experience of
more ease and balance. Over time, with an increased awareness
you can utilize this skill in all your daily activities
using less physical effort.
A vast number of people from musicians and actors to athletes
and presenters use the Alexander Technique to prevent
injury and improve performance.
About the Teacher
“I was first introduced to the Alexander Technique
in 1997 during a performing arts diploma at Lewes College.
Years later I began to notice considerable tension in
myself. My breathing and posture were poor and I could
never seem to sit quietly or comfortably. This led me
to have one to one lessons with a local teacher in my
area. Gradually, inspired by my lessons and my teacher
I decided to train, gaining a more in depth understanding
of how to help myself and eventually how to help others.
I realised that real change happens slowly and is unique
to each individual.”
Daniel has completed an approved three-year training course
at the Brighton Alexander Technique College with Carolyn
Nicholls, author of the recently published book Body,
Breath and Being. |
